WWE News: JR Speaks on UFC 91, Angle’s MMA Future & WWE’s Economy

Jim Ross has once again updated his blog over at JRsBarBQ.com. Below are some highlights:

-Ross on WWE and the tough economy: “Don’t kid yourself, the economy is going to affect virtually every phase of our lives here in the States and the smart touring companies won’t hit the same markets as often and will always make sure they have a bottom end priced ticket that the average Joe can afford. The cost of bringing a family to an event or any kind is often times staggering. I know to attend an Oklahoma Thunder NBA game one needs a short term loan to take a family of four. The WWE having a $20 tickets is very prudent especially during these challenging times.”

-Ross on UFC 91: “I DVR’ed the UFC 91 event on Saturday night while watching it live and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation again after previewing it for a second time. Some of the under card fights were really exciting even though I have to admit I did not have a great deal of familiarity regarding some of the participants. As a suggestion, the UFC needs a third voiceover talent to read the video packages to give announcers (Mike) Goldberg and (Joe) Rogan a break.”

-Ross on the possibility of seeing a Kurt Angle follow in Brock Lesnar’s footsteps: “After Brock Lesnar’s huge weekend in the UFC, I assume we can expect the plethora of rumor and speculation that Kurt Angle will someday be going to the UFC. I don’t see it happening myself nor do many others that I know that have infinitely more knowledge of the matter than I. As I have said before, if Kurt had tried his hand at this ten years ago, I could see it possibly being a successful venture. But with lingering, neck issues and an absence from competitive athletics for so long, it would seem that particular ship has sailed for the 1996 Olympic Gold medal winner in free style wrestling.”

TNA News: Big Update on the Status of Mick Foley’s Proposed New Sitcom

It is being reported that Mick Foley is shopping around to several networks, including SpikeTV, a new sitcom that would see Foley star as an exaggerated version of himself. In addition to Foley, actor/comedian Joey Kola has been attached to the project playing the role of Barry Blumenthal, who would be Foley’s agent on the show, and is a spin-off of Foley’s real life agent Barry Bloom.

The show is still seeking a female lead to play Foley’s wife Nicole, who will be loosely based on Foley’s real life wife Collette. The concept of the on-screen marriage will be similar to that of Foley being an average guy who marries a really good looking woman. While no names have been mentioned for the role, there appears to be a role in the works for Christy Canyon, a former adult star, who will play the part of Foley’s next door neighbor. Foley has written about his fondness for Canyon in several books, so it appears she will play a recurring, although limited, role on the show. Scripts for the yet to be titled series are currently in development, and one pitch idea hopes that SpikeTV will want to pick up the show as Foley is a TNA star and it fits with the company’s corporate synergy.

WWE News: Matt Hardy Blogs About His Over Seas Trip and His Knee Injury

Matt Hardy has posted a blog on his Myspace page, which not only details his over seas trip to Europe, but also describes the hyper-extension of his knee during his match against Finlay which aired this past Tuesday night on ECW. Hardy writes:

I fortunately retained the ECW Championship in a hard-hitting, fantastic match against the veteran Irishman. Unfortunately, something none of you at home witnessed-because it happened during a commercial break period-was me painfully hyper-extending my surgically repaired left knee. I continued that match without acknowledging it to anyone but knew I had hurt it. After the match, I was examined and diagnosed with a slightly torn PCL and stretched ligaments in the back of my knee. I could finished the tour out, but had to do some major treatment, wrapping and bracing of my knee. And by the way, I thought going into this day I had tomorrow off because it was a Smackdown only taping. I find out at the end of the night I’m needed tomorrow for both episodes of Smackdown. I guess that’s what you get for being a WORKHORSE, HA! Now I already have the stress of an extremely hard trip plus a knee injury. Welcome to the wrestling business boys and girls. I felt much better when I got back to the hotel, my Smackdown crew got in, and the ECW, Raw, and Smackdown crews hit the hotel bar. I think the entire WWE drank every ounce of alcohol and liquor in Manchester that night! LOL!

Day 6
Manchester, England - I wake up and my knee feels absolutely horrible. I can noly walk. It’s one of those moments when I ask myself how am I gonna do this.. How am I gonna perform tonight. After soaking and icing and treating and wrapping and bracing my knee thoroughly, somehow I do. I wrestled Shelton Benjamin in a Champion versus Champion match and came out victorious. I thought it was a helluva match as well. In case you’re wondering, I was in excruciating pain the whole time. I also wrestled another tag match that will be featured on this week’s Smackdown. I also wanna tell everyone that I was extremely proud of Jeff on this day as he had possible his best TV day performance EVER. That night, a little social time was had-but I actually got a good night’s sleep. I had to-my knee and my performances for the week were depending on it.

WWE News: WWE.com Article Takes Shot at UFC 91 PPV and MMA

Source: wrestlezone.com

WWE.com has an article up commenting on last night’s UFC 91 PPV which aired last night. The article takes quite a few shots at UFC and the MMA business itself, at one point saying the PPV bouts were ending quickly “leaving UFC producers scrambling to fill the three-hour event with content.”

WWE went on to say “The dearth of hearty competition left many viewers to watch less prestigious undercard fights and only served to bolster claims that UFC pay-per-view events can often be a “crap shoot” in regards to filling the full three hours.”

FMW’s take (or rather, Slegna’s take): Personally, as both a fan of WWE and MMA, these “less-prestigious” bouts are a great way to showcase new talent or perhaps up-and-coming talent. The undercard matches could potentially steal the show, like at UFC 91, Fight of the Night honors went to the Gurgel/Riley match which was, yes, fought on the undercard. I mean, showing a bout with talent that nobody cares about can’t be much worse than a filler Diva’s tag match on a PPV anyways, right? Keep in mind that this is just my point of view. Feel free to comment and encourage debate on the subject. I’d love to hear your thoughts on this.

WWE News: JR Comments on Brock Lesnar’s Title Win Last Night

Jim Ross updated his blog commenting on Brock Lesnar’s UFC Heavyweight Championship victory last night. Below are some highlights, and you can read the entire blog at JrsBarBQ.com.

-Ross on Brock Lensar winning the UFC Heavyweight Title: “The pro wrestling bias has never been more prominently displayed than by what I perceive to be a vocal minority of MMA fans against Lesnar simply because he signed with the WWE after an outstanding amateur wrestling career that was topped off by winning a NCAA Heavyweight Title in 2000 after finishing 2nd in the NCAA’s in 1999 while wrestling for the University of Minnesota.”

-Ross on Lesnar’s rise from developmental to WWE main eventer: “Brock’s journey to the main roster in the WWE wasn’t without its bumps in the road but collectively we got through them and Lesnar progressed in rapid fashion to the main talent roster of the WWE. Lesnar was earning seven figures faster than any rookie I ever signed in my role in the talent department in the WWE and that includes such stars as Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson and Kurt Angle.”

ROH News: Former ROH Booker Gabe Sapolsky Breaks Silence In Blog

Former ROH booker, Gabe Sapolsky posted the following blog at his myspace site:

I’m Bloggin’
Current mood: accomplished

I’ve had a little over three weeks to reflect, think about things and get out of the ROH bubble. It’s funny how you don’t realize you are in the bubble until you are out of it. It is actually amazing the conclusions you come to and the things that become clear about yourself and business once you are removed from a situation. I’ve come to a lot of realizations in the last few weeks. First of all, while I won’t admit that I agree with the decision to dismiss me, now that I’ve thought about things I certainly can’t disagree with it. There are several reasons for this all relating to me and my behavoir, but that is for another time if I ever decide to even publicly talk about it.

If I have learned one thing in life it is that nothing lasts forever. I have also always found that one thing in life leads to the next and everything happens for a reason.

Cary Silkin put a lot of faith and trust in me, more than I could ever hope or ask for. He deserves much more than a huge thank you from me, but it is all I can offer at this time. Cary is the man. I still have nothing but love for ROH and everyone there. It is full of hard-working, professional, intelligent people and the pro wrestling business needs what ROH offers. Most importantly, it is full of good people and that includes the entire office and the locker room. I am looking forward to seeing how the company grows and what direction it takes now. It is a fun time for ROH with everything so fresh and exciting.

I am going to try to stay at least a little relevant by blogging here. I might talk about why something was booked a certain way, maybe explain some of my theories or philosophies or who knows what else might come up. I certainly feel a lot more free and open to write and talk about things now. Right now, I have a couple of personal writing projects I’m working on. The first one is on the incredible baseball season I was able to experience over the summer (you can see some highlights in my pics). I don’t know if I’ll share this, but it will be fun to write.

I do want to take a moment and talk about the current ROH PPV “Driven” (hey I’m trying to break my shilling habit and it’s not easy). First of all, I never hyped or shilled anything that I didn’t believe in. My credibility is very important to me and the last thing I wanted was for someone to buy something and then say I overhyped it. It is/was extremely important for me for everyone to get more than their money’s worth when they purchase something I was involved in. Maybe I did see things through rose colored glasses sometimes. Maybe my personal involvement in seeing what kind of work everyone put into a match or something made me like it that much more. I never said or wrote anything to mislead someone to buy a product that I didn’t believe in though.

That said I just want to put over Kevin Steen, El Generico, Jimmy Jacobs and Tyler Black for the main event of the current PPV. This is one of my favorite matches in ROH history. It is now extra special for me because it meant that the final show I was involved with in Boston ended with a resounding bang. I saw Ric Flair vs. Lex Luger in that complex in 1989 and now was able to produce a great PPV from the same location. That is very special to me. Steen, Generico, Jacobs and Black deserve all the credit for putting together and executing what I believe is truly a perfect match. I have nothing to gain by plugging this. I’m not a shill for ROH anymore. I just want people to see it because these four deserve for it to be seen. Thanks guys for giving me that memory too.

On another note, I have read some criticism about the format of the PPV. Normally I would never respond to this, but hey I have nothing better to do now. However, this blog seems long enough. I’ll be back in a few days or weeks or whenever to write about this. Thanks for reading!

WWE News: JR Speaks on Lesnar’s Weigh-In, His UFC Buyrate Prediction and More

Jim Ross has updated his blog once again, this time focusing his comments on the UFC 91 PPV scheduled to take place tonight. Below are some highlights, and you can read the entire blog at JrsBarBQ.com:

-Ross on Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture: “We all have our opinions and I feel that, from watching the weigh in that Couture looked more relaxed and certainly looked to be in amazing cardio vascular condition. Couture’s camp thinks that Lesnar will fatigue by the 3rd round or so and are apparently counting on it…”Not knowing Lesnar’s true mental state of mind, one cannot accurately assess how ‘tight’ Lesnar actually is but he looked somewhat ‘off’ at the weigh in. However, that’s just one man’s opinion who has known Brock on a personal level for quite some time even though we have not communicated since he left the WWE.

“Lesnar can be distracted and handles pressure differently than many athletes. Nonetheless if Lesnar can have success early, gain some confidence and relax to the degree that he’s not psyching himself out I still see Lesnar winning but I am not as sold on that weak prediction as I was prior to the weigh in.”

-Ross on the UFC buyrate: “UFC officials are predicting north of one million pay-per-view buys but I don’t see it. The American economy is deplorable, the event isn’t sold out, and with PPV buys being discretionary purchases I would suggest that if UFC 91 gets 500,000-750,000 buys it should be considered a major success. Any one who argues that the economy won’t affect the number of buys is fooling one’s self.”

-Ross on the upcoming legends roundtable taping: “The addition to Cowboy Bill Watts to the Legends Roundtable to be taped in December will make the two shows we produce “must see” TV as Watts will hold nothing back, has no agenda other than his own personal opinions, and isn’t looking to get back in the biz. Watts’ opinions will be his and his alone and knowing Bill he will do all he can to steal the show from the other panelists. I will be a panelist on one show and the host of another as I understand it. The two topics we will be discussing are Texas Wrestling and the many, many top wrestling stars with Texas roots and African Americans and the contributions they have made in the wrestling business.

WWE News: 2 Raw Superstars Make Their In-Ring Returns for FCW Last Night

2 Raw superstars returned to the ring last night at the FCW tapings in Florida. Melina, who is coming off a heel injury suffered back in June of 2008, made her in-ring return in a tag match that saw her team with Tyler Reks to take on Alicia Fox and Jack Gabriel in a tag match. Melina wasn’t scheduled to return to the ring until January of 2009, however her rehab worked ahead of schedule. Also, suspended superstar Dolph Ziggler returned to the ring, losing a match to Johnny Curtis. Ziggler was suspended for 30 says due to a violation of WWE’s Wellness Policy.

In other FCW news, infrequently seen ECW star Armando Estrada worked a tag match along side Lawrence Knight and Tyson Tarver in a victory over Yamamoto, Kafu & Johnny Prime. Ricky Ortiz defeated Kizarny, who has yet to debut on Smackdown. It should be noted that this past week’s Smackdown and tonight’s broadcast do not contain vignettes promoting Kizarny’s debut, and he does not make an appearance on next week’s show either.

WWE News: Latest On Christian Cage To WWE, Working Indy Dates

Additionally, Cage is scheduled to work the BSE Pro shows in Canada December 12-13, along with TNA’s Traci Brooks and Christy Hemme. You can visit BSEPro.com for more information on these events. This is not related to whether he’s leaving for WWE or not, rather it’s a couple of appearances he has in case you are in the area.

Kenny Dykstra has removed the blog he posted on his myspace page that we reported on earlier today. In its place he has written the following:

Dykstra’s original blog said the following:

“First I would just like to say thank you to everyone who left a comment or message and for the support. It is greatly appreciated. Believe it or not i actually am happy to be gone from wwe. I dont have to do things around their schedule and i dont have to answer to anybody. i have never fealt so free in my entire life. i had been working with wwe since i was 16 so ive never really known anything else. i did have fun with wwe but the creative side never used me properly or really gave me an opportunity to get over. it sucks when you know your better than the majority and your only used to make people look good. will i stay wrestling? WWE News: Mr. Kennedy Speaks On His Return and Injury/Career Setbacks

The Orlando Sentinel recently conducted an interview with WWE star Ken Kennedy. Below are some highlights, and you can read the entire interview at this link.

You mentioned injuries and the one you have right now which is a shoulder injury that has kept you sidelined since August. You’ve been with the WWE for about four years now. Before you got there, I don’t think you ever had any major injuries. Since you’ve been there, you’ve had three. How difficult is that to not be a buzzkill and keep you down?

“Well, the schedule got increasingly…I’ve wrestled a lot more since I’ve gotten to the WWE. Our schedule is a lot tougher than the independent schedule since we wrestle anywhere from three to seven days a week. Seven days a week when we do our overseas tour and, so, it’s just one of those things. The human body is not meant to be abused like that day in and day out. Things happen and I had some unfortunate set of circumstances happen two out of the three times. One time was just kind of a fluke injury and the other two times were kind of mistakes made in the ring. Hey, it’s just part of the game.”

With the injuries, was it just a simple thing because it seems that more often it’s the simplest things in wrestling where guys seem to get hurt the most often?

“The first time I was dropkicked off an apron and dropkicked very, very hard off an apron so I ended up flying through the air like the Matrix and I hit the concrete floor with my arm outstretched on my side and that just popped my lat right off the bone. With the second injury, it was one of those fluke things where Batista just gave me a clothesline and I took a back bump like I’ve taken a million times before and I just felt my tricep pop. It can be anything on any given day. You look at some of the tapes, you look at some of the previous injuries for some of the guys. Triple H went to plant his foot and tore his quadriceps right off the bone.”

How is your rehab going and what’s the timetable for your return?

“The rehab is going pretty good. It’s slow going ” there’s not a whole lot I can do right now. I’m going to see Dr. Andrews and he’s going to give me an update and tell me how he wants me to start progressing my rehabilitation. He initially had told the office that I would be looking at a February 28 return date if everything goes well. I’m going to cross my fingers and say a couple prayers, take my vitamins and drink my milk and hopefully I’ll be back by then, maybe a little sooner.”

You mentioned Austin ” I’ve heard that you’re a big fan of his and have become pretty close with him. What kind of advice has he given you?

“The nice thing about Steve is that…I’ve had a couple opportunities to sit down and watch my match with him. He would show up at a TV and they always have a tape of the match of the previous week so we would sit down and watch the match. It was pretty neat because he picks apart minor details that mean so much that the normal viewer can’t quite put their finger on but would mean so much more if that little piece of the puzzle was there. That’s kind of the stuff that he helps me with ” picking apart my matches and finding those little, minor details that make the match that much better.”

WWE News: JR Speaks on Jeff Hardy’s SD Performance & MVP’s Losing Streak

Jim Ross has updated the blog section of his website at JrsBarbq.com. Below are excerpts:

On Jeff Hardy’s performance at the Smackdown tapings: “Jeff Hardy had two of the best back to back shows taped in one night that I can remember seeing in years. Jeff’s match vs the Undertaker
this Friday night on Smackdown is simply off the page as is the build to the final match of the evening. These two had some nasty physicality near the announce table that more closely resembled felonious assault that a wrestling match. Old school, physicality especially when the ‘weapons’ came out. Without question, on of my favorite bouts I’ve seen in a long time.”

On Smackdown’s technical difficulties: “Technically, when the WWE gets out of their own production truck many things can go wrong. The ‘World’s Angriest Announcer’ and I had serious audio issues. If we seem like we are a little too ‘hot’ or seem to be ‘yelling’ at you Friday night its because we couldn’t hear each other most of the night. It’s a long, technically, boring story that you will be the final judge of come Friday night.”

On MVP’s losing streak: “MVP’s woes seem to be getting worse. It seems as if some fans are beginning to feel for MVP’s bad luck. I can see better days ahead for MVP after he hits rock bottom which is seemingly in sight.”

WWE News: Chavo Speaks Out on Wrestler Impersonators, Raw Segment Cut

Chavo Guerrero posted the following blog on his WWE Universe account addressing wrestler impersonators:

“I can’t believe some people have nothing better to do in their lives than to pretend they are someone else. Please forgive me if I sound bitter, but I don’t like it when people read something and think that I said it when I didn’t. If someone is going to make an opinion about me, I’d like that person to have all the facts first. Then if they don’t like me, well the don’t like me. But they will not be liking me, not some person pretending to be me. Make any sense? I hope so. I know not everyone is going to like me, and to be honest, I don’t care. I stopped trying to please everyone a long time ago. We all get so caught up in trying to make people like us, that we lose who we truly are. If someone doesn’t like the real you, then you shouldn’t have to change who you are to please them. Stay true to yourself and the people who like you will be your true friends. If you surround yourself with those people, everything will work itself out.”

A segment featuring JBL was cut this past Monday night on Raw because the show ran too long. According to live reports, JBL cut a promo hyping his match at Survivor Series which was later announced on WWE.com. He was wearing a neck brace during the segment and explained it was needed due to the tombstone piledriver he took from The Undertaker the week before. He then ran a contest offering a fan money if he/she could name the past five US presidents. The fan was unsuccessful.

TNA News: TNA Gets Good Media Coverage For Sarah Palin Invitation

TNA has been getting good media coverage since publicly inviting Sarah Palin to their Final Resolution pay per view. Fox Sports, The Orlando Sentinel, and the Baltimore Sun are a few of those that have picked up on the story.

TNA invited Palin to become an honorary member of the Beautiful People and although it’s not likely she actually shows up, the idea seems to be working as far as publicity for the company.

TNA News: Nash & Samoa Joe Furious Backstage, News On Their Match & Future Plans

- The people that were most upset about Scott Hall being at the Turning Point show were Kevin Nash and Samoa Joe. The storyline they wanted to get over in their match was that Joe took everything Nash had and still kicked out and was likely going to win if not for the low blow and Nash’s feet on the ropes. Nobody has ever kicked out of two Nash powerbombs except The Undertaker. Nash and Joe worked hard on their match, even screening an old Sgt. Slaughter vs. Pat Patterson match for ideas. There is a feeling that because the fans were expecting Scott Hall to run in at any second, it really took away from the match.

Nash and Joe didn’t need Hall to get over their angle and TNA nor the two were not going to build a storyline or a match finish on the unreliable Scott Hall. The joke backstage was that Hall took a full year to show up for his scheduled pay-per-view appearance and there are still a lot of hard feelings towards Hall within TNA for missing last year’s show.

The storyline for Nash and Joe now is that Nash will refuse to fight Joe again because he beat him already while coming across as a bit of a coward. No pay-per-view rematches are in the works for the two right now but they are set to face each other multiple times on the upcoming European tour. Eventually the storyline will be that Joe gets TNA management to give him another match with Nash after Nash doing everything he can to avoid it. The idea is that Joe builds up outrage that he took everything Nash gave him and could only be pinned after a low blow and a tainted pin.

WWE News: Update on WWE’s Decision to Release Elijah Burke

The Wrestling Observer is reporting that Elijah Burke’s release was most likely the result of minimal creative team support. When Burke was wrestling on Smackdown, he initially had the support of Court Bauer, who was writing for the show at the time. ECW head writer Paul Heyman then asked that Burke be brought over to his brand, and within several weeks he was given a solid push from both Heyman and Dave Lagana, who was also a strong supporter of Elijah. However, Paul Heyman eventually left WWE, following 2007 Dave Lagana was fired, and Court Bauer quit the company. Burke was then left with little to no support from the creative team, and was pulled off television shortly after memorial day.

TNA News: Nash Asks For Hall To Be Kicked Out At Final Resolution

The PWTorch.com Newsletter is reporting that Kevin Nash recommended that TNA officials kick the intoxicated Scott Hall out of the building at the Turning Point PPV on Sunday night. Nash even went so far as to suggest that police should escort Hall off the property. Hall was upset with Nash, but eventually left without incident.

Hall was not scheduled to be included in the storylines, nor was he allowed at ringside. Hall simple showed up with the Insane Clown Posse, who were granted permission to sit in the front row in their JCW shirts as part of a friendly promotional deal. Jeff Jarrett personally gave ICP permission to appear on camera, but was unaware that Hall would be accompanying them. There is no heat between TNA and ICP, but management didn’t want Hall to distract fans from the in-ring action so they had them removed after a couple matches.
